Elect Ernie Thompson for
Yuba County Assessor

Welcome!  Thank you for visiting my website.  I am honored that you would take the time to learn about me and my candidacy for the Assessor of Yuba County. I hope it will give you clear picture of who I am, what I stand for, my qualifications, and my vision for the role of Assessor.

To be affective as an Assessor an individual must possess a unique set of qualities and skills.   It requires knowledge of property assessment laws combined with an expertise in the appraisal of real and personal property.  An Assessor must also be a leader with the experience and ability to manage an organization and lead the individuals within the organization.  But, it all really starts with the desire to serve and represent the people.

The people entrust the Assessor with the duty to carry out their will in the assessment of taxable property.  A will expressed in the laws that have been passed at the ballot box and through our elected representatives.  They need an Assessor who will proactively educate them on the law, apply the law equitably, and also act as an advocate by pointing out inequities within the law when discovered.

In 1978 the citizens of California rebelled against excessive property taxes.  We know that rebellion today as Proposition 13.  The purpose of Prop 13 was to establish a system of reasonable, affordable, and predictable property taxes.  As Assessor I will uphold the spirit of Prop 13 because I understand where we have been and I know why we are here.

I have 20 years of experience as an appraiser in the Assessor’s Office.  This includes 18 years between Yuba and Sutter Counties.  The past 2 ½  years I have been the Chief Appraiser for Nevada County where I manage the 12 staff members of the valuation division.  My career has given me the opportunity to work under the leadership of 5 different Assessors.  I have also served 2 terms as a councilman for the City of Wheatland.  Through this journey I have developed the appraisal expertise, knowledge of the law, leadership skills, and service mentality required to be the Assessor of Yuba County.

I invite you to learn more by reading the other pages of my website listed on the menu bar.

Thank you for your time.

"It has been a true pleasure to work with Ernie.  He has a strong work ethic as well as excellent appraisal and leadership skills.  Yuba County would be well-served to have Ernie Thompson as their next Assessor.  Ernie has a compassionate yet fair approach in serving taxpayers and administering California property tax laws."
