Meet Ernie Thompson

Candidate for Yuba County Assessor

I am a 47 year-old resident of Wheatland.  I grew up in Wheatland and it has been my home for most of my adult life.  I love the close knit feel of a small rural community and the Yuba-Sutter Area has been a great place to grow up, go to school, work, and raise a family.

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.  We are pretty much into everything outdoors.  Hunting, fishing, camping, riding horses, water skiing are some of our favorite pastimes.  We also have fun just doing projects around house.

At one time in my life I raced stock cars as a hobby.  I was fortunate to have won several races and two track championships.  I do not race anymore but short track racing has and always will be in my blood.

Raising three sons fills up most of the time these days.  One son is at college, another is a sophomore in high school, and the youngest is in middle school.  Little league, school work, 4-H projects, and the other day to day activities of life keeps us busy.  It can seem overwhelming at times but it is rewarding and I have come to realize that time with them is short so I am just trying to absorb all of it while I can.

I am a Christian and I try each day to be the best reflection of his image as I can to the world around me.  Some days I am better at it than others.

After graduating from Wheatland High School in 1988 I attended Yuba College where I earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration.  Then it was on to Sonoma State University where I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management.  I maintained a 3.9GPA throughout college.

As part of earning and maintaining my appraisal licensing I have taken hundreds of hours of training courses on appraisal and California Property Tax Laws over the years.

Work Experience

My career as an appraiser in the Assessor’s Office started over twenty years ago with Yuba County in 1995.  At that time, I knew very little about appraisal and even less about the Assessor’s Office or California Property Tax Laws.  By 2001, I had reached the level of Appraiser III and earned my Advanced Appraiser Certificate from the State Board of Equalization.  After 9 ½ years with Yuba County I decided to pursue a private appraisal practice and other business ventures so I left Yuba County.  It was during this time that I obtained my Certified General Appraiser License with the California Bureau of Real Estate Appraisers which I held from 2005 through 2007.  This license allows an appraiser to value all residential and commercial property in California.

In 2007, I was finally in a position to start my appraisal business when the real estate market started to crack.  It was obvious that the timing wasn’t right so I decided it was time to return to a more stable form of income for my family.  Fortunately, appraiser positions opened in Sutter County and Yolo Counties.  After the interview process I was offered jobs with both counties and decided to accept the Sutter County job.  I worked with Sutter County for about 8 years.

In 2015, I was hired as the Chief Appraiser in Nevada County and in the same year I also obtained the Auditor-Appraiser designation for my Advanced Appraiser License with the BOE.  This means that I am now licensed to appraise any type of taxable property whether real or personal.  As Chief Appraiser I manage the valuation division of the office which consists of 12 staff members.  This includes 8 Real Property Appraisers, 2 Auditor-Appraisers, and 2 clerical support staff positions.

Over the past twenty years I have worked for 3 different Assessors Offices, each one with its own method of processing the workload.  I have also served under the leadership of 5 different Assessors, each with their own unique management style and I have learned something valuable from each one.  My journey has given me the opportunity to appraise every type of property, gain extensive knowledge of the Revenue and Taxation Code, and develop my management skills.  I know appraisal, the law, and what it takes to run an Assessor’s Office.

Community Involvement

I am a big believer in being involved and giving back to my community.  Everyone should be involved in some way.  The events and activities of a community don’t just happen it takes the efforts of the people.

I served 2 terms on the Wheatland City Council.  During my time on the council I was vice mayor and chaired every subcommittee at one time or another.  I have managed several Little league, youth soccer, and basketball teams in the last 15 years.  There are several other community organizations that I have given my time to over the years.
